Welcome math people

There’s something about a new website. The first post is always the hardest to write. Trying to keep the excitement of creating something new and getting that excitement across to visitors is something I’ve always struggled with. But here I am again, writing the first post in a brand new blog.

So what’s this site? Math for Games? It sounds pretty boring. And to be fair, if you’re just looking to play games this may not be the place for you. Maybe I’ll find a few Flash games to embed that are math-y, but that’s not really the intent.

What this site is for is a place for me to collect information about the math behind computer games. What I’ve found when I’ve taught students how to write computer games is that they are surprised by how much math is involved. The math isn’t even necessarily all that tough. But it is there.

The problem is that when I’ve tried to find good examples of the math behind games Google usually takes me to a forum where one programmer is explaining to another programmer. Aside from the info being spread all over the internet, it’s tough to find information explained in such a way to those just learning to make games can take the explanation and run with it. Hopefully this will become that place.

For now though, this is just an empty blog. This post is as much to make sure the theme is touched up just like I want it as anything else. But I do have a handful of post ideas waiting in the pipe, so hopefully it shouldn’t be too long before there’s some real stuff here.
